Their guide, Nathan Slaughter, is a Quaker who appears to reject violence; the dangers around him make that conviction increasingly difficult to read. Bird turns a frontier adventure into a story of hidden identity and vengeance.
An illustrated English edition with a glossary, an afterword and a note on the edition. Bird’s portrayal of frontier warfare, including its hostility toward Indigenous people, belongs to the novel’s historical perspective; the editorial material helps readers place it in context.
