His African experience and the imaginative Africa of his novels must be distinguished. The first gave him places and political memories; the second reshaped them into romance.
Born in Norfolk, he worked in southern Africa as a young man. Returning to England, he made both fiction and the condition of rural life substantial parts of his work.
King Solomon’s Mines brought success in 1885; She followed in 1887. The adventure writer also became an investigator of agricultural and rural questions.
The lost kingdom and the dangerous journey provide his novels with structure. Their imagined antiquities and imperial viewpoints belong to the fiction’s historical moment, even where the storytelling reaches far beyond it.
Haggard’s power lies in giving an invented world the weight of an old memory. Reading him again restores the full scale of the romance behind its familiar plots.
